When I first started homeschooling twenty years ago, I thought it would simply be doing school at home.

But, as I began the process of educating my children and in turn homeschooling myself, I realized the power of thinking outside the box.

In this first of a series, I share the power of learning to think "outside the box."

Diana Waring, author of Beyond SurvivalReaping the Harvest and Diana Waring's History Revealed world history curriculum, discovered years ago that "the key to education is relationship."

Extremely happily married since 1979, Bill and Diana Waring homeschooled their three children nearly twenty years. The Waring kids (now all grown) were the proving grounds for all the concepts and encouragements Bill and Diana teach—real-life examples of the wonders of home schooling! In 1999, their youngest, Melody, competing against 75,000 other entrants, won the VFW National Youth Essay Contest, receiving the opportunity to read her winning essay before 8,000 VFW members. Having graduated summa cum laude from Lawrence University as a government major, she is focusing on her MSW. Michael, their second-born, returned safely to his wife Ashley and baby Zachary from a tour of duty as a U.S. Navy Corpsman in Iraq. Now with their second son, Zeek, Michael is continuing his education and enjoying his career in the Navy. The eldest, Isaac, after graduating from Cornish Institute of the Arts and marrying Lissy, is a professional actor/director, musician, teacher, and songwriter.

Diana studied music, drama, and French in college, graduating with a B.A. in French. Diana and Bill have worked in speaking and writing for the Christian home school and private school community for over 20 years. They served six years on the Board of Directors for Washington Association of Teaching Christian Homes. Through their business/ministry Diana Waring Presents (formerly, Diana Waring—History Alive!), they have met and talked with home schoolers throughout the U.S. and Canada, and on three other continents. The curriculum for world history study that Diana wrote, beginning in 1994, has been updated and expanded with new research and a more user-friendly presentation of the material. She is well known for her rapid-fire history recordings and workshops, but is also appreciated for her workshops and books of home school encouragement, like Beyond Survival and Reaping the Harvest. Some of the fascinating concepts covered in the books received emphasis while she was reading and being mentored on how students learn and how teachers can facilitate learning. These have also been incorporated into the history materials.

The importance of "living books" is brought home and made practical in this interview with author and Beautiful Feet Books publisher, Rea Berg.  Serving the homeschool community since 1984, Rea has much inspiration and encouragement to share with us during this first of two episodes.
